My Top 1000 Songs #928: Archie, Marry Me

[I've been writing up my Top 1000 songs on a daily basis--you can see them all in descending order by hitting the All My Favorite Songs tag.]

I don't have a ton of songs from the past decade on this list--I think a song needs enough time to germinate before you can really call it one of your all-time favorites--much less multiple songs from a single artist. But, hey, I really love Toronto indie rockers Alvvays. While I'm especially partial towards 2017's Antisocialites (that record's "Lollipop" making a previous appearance here), it's hard to deny the magic of "Archie, Marry Me," off the band's 2014 self-titled debut.

The track is a sweet bit of romantic pop, supercharged with just a touch of post-Jesus and Mary Chain wall-of-sound fizzy reverb. Of course, being an energized indie pop song is hardly a fast-track to success, making it all the more surprising (in the best way) that it seems to have had some commercial success and pop culture traction. Now and then, the people get it right.
