My Top 1000 Songs #523: 1880 Or So

[I've been writing up my Top 1000 songs on a daily basis--you can see them all in descending order by hitting the All My Favorite Songs tag.]

Given the one-two punch of 1977's Marquee Moon and 1978's (underrated) Adventure, it's hard to find much room in my life for Television's (surprisingly solid) 1992 eponymous reunion album. Still, opening track "1880 Or So" is as great as anything from the original incarnation of the band, an updated, more 90s alt-rock flavored approach to their inimitable twin guitar sound. Swathed in dark atmospherics, the track feels particularly cinematic, a rich groove that conjures something haunting and alluring. The guitar tone is spectacular, Tom Verlaine deploys his most seductive croon; and while I may not play the whole record very often, it's the sort of song I still feel compelled to throw onto mixes all the time.
