My Top 1000 Songs #353: Space Age Love Song

[I've been writing up my Top 1000 songs on a daily basis--you can see them all in descending order by hitting the All My Favorite Songs tag.]

The Flock of Seagulls' 1982 debut is one of those records so closely associated with high school that it's hard to hear it without encountering immediate flashbacks. And while "I Ran" is the most obvious go-to from the LP, given its extensive radio & MTV attention at the time (and its enduring familiarity), "Space Age Love Song" is my personal favorite, a song I can hear as more than a slice of nostalgia but as a legit great song on its own merits. Strip away the haircuts and the new wave affectations, and you're left with that terrific guitar figure, washes of reverb and the unexpectedly heartwarming "I was falling in love" refrain. Thoroughly of the moment yet surprisingly ageless.
