My Top 1000 Songs #804: It's About Time

[I've been writing up my Top 1000 songs on a daily basis--you can see them all in descending order by hitting the All My Favorite Songs tag.]

Indie pop act The Lemonheads are probably best remembered for 1992's breatkthrough LP It's A Shame About Ray (and that album's unforgettable title track); but I've always had a preference for the following year's follow-up, Come On Feel The Lemonheads. It opens with a 3-4 song run of drop-dead perfect tunes falling somewhere between jubilant power pop and mellow jangle pop, and, frankly, I could've gone with any of those as a personal fave.

But I'm giving the slight edge to "It's About Time," a lovely pop tune with striking yet ambiguous lyrics, highlighted by some terrific backing vocals from Juliana Hatfield. As I was knee-deep in my love of Hatfield and the Blake Babies at the time, the song offered a delightful merger between two great bands, in the service of a captivatingly melodic tune that captures just the slightest breeze of 60s sunshine pop, like Simon & Garfunkel updated for a more cynical age. "Have your people contact mine, and keep your lawyer on the line..." Yep, it must be love!
