My Top 1000 Songs #283: Someone Who's Cool

[I've been writing up my Top 1000 songs on a daily basis--you can see them all in descending order by hitting the All My Favorite Songs tag.]

My music collection is packed with really good, even great, power pop songs. You get a reliably comfortable chord progression played out on a just-crunchy-enough guitar, a memorable hook, a sing-along chorus, and you're there. So it's pretty special when an artist comes up with something in the genre that rises above the pack, that really sticks with you.

Canadian indie pop band Odds (no the) nailed it with "Someone Who's Cool," off 1996's Nest. It's one of those songs that, back in the day, you'd hear just once on the radio and immediately run out to the nearest Tower Records to buy, even if you knew nothing about the band or the rest of the album. (Fortunately, in this case, the album is pretty solid, something frustratingly rare in a genre that favors singles strewn across mixtapes and compilations.)

I mean, damn, that chorus: "It was the suit that got me the gig. It was the tear that got me the girl. I'm a sheep in this wolf's clothing, I'm a picture that I'm holding, of someone who is cool." Drop-dead perfect.

Great video as well!
