My Top 1000 Songs #487: My First Band

[I've been writing up my Top 1000 songs on a daily basis--you can see them all in descending order by hitting the All My Favorite Songs tag.]

Yeah, kinda cheesy to run this back-to-back with yesterday's pick, Zappa's "Joe's Garage." But I used to play them back-to-back on my radio show--also, as my fellow DJ Mick Sludge would point out, kinda trite--and they've become a little intertwined in my head. "My First Band," a 1985 single from the Ben Vaughn Combo (before Vaughn went on to a long and illustrious career as a solo performer and all-around musical force), is, like "Joe's Garage," a wistful look back at both rock & roll oldies and, yeah, his first band. Here it's a deliberately basic 3-chord guitar & organ track, just a riff on "Hang On Sloopy," but ridiculously fun. Always brings me back to hearing the band play it live at a college party.

  1. So much love for Ben Vaughn, especially the early Combo days. Had the great pleasure of seeing them once in Jax, FL shortly after a long relationship had collapsed. 'She's Your Problem Now' brought me some petty joy that night.

This song brings pure, not petty, joy every time I hear it.
